Chapter 11

I passed Vice in the hall. He looked gorgeous, of course, but also deeply relaxed. Considering what I’d seen on the monitors I could understand that. He pulled me in for a hug and kissed my cheek. Then he gave me a wink and walked on, a little drunkenly.

Does Yuri give better head than I do?

It was not a thought I expected to have, but there we were.

I knocked gently and opened the door to Yuri’s room. He was lying just as I’d seen him on the monitors in Trib’s room, his erection already fading under the thin sheets. The TV was on, but he muted it and waved me in.

“You have come to see me, Your Highness?” he said. “I had missed you. I know that you had a run in with the dog Sokolov, but no one will tell me what happened. Will you tell me?

I sat on the edge of the bed.

“I will. It’s best that you hear it from me anyways.”

I told him the details and his eyes darkened as he listened. I could see the cold rage in his features growing as I described what happened. Sokolov kidnapping me and jailing me to use as bait.

“Why was I not told?” he growled, his voice shaking with anger.

“Trib intercepted the call and spoofed your voice, then she did what she was supposed to do and sent backup. At that moment, Magnus was willing and available, so he came and got me out of a tight spot.”

“But I could have—”

“No, you couldn’t have. You can barely walk, Yuri. You’d have died just trying to get in there. What you need to do is get healthy and get strong. You need to heal.”

“I am a fast healer,” he said. “I will show you.”

He sat up, using nothing but his abdominals, and faced me, sitting upright. I saw what it cost him to do it in the pallor of his face.

“Lie down, Yuri.”

He exhaled painfully and lowered himself, looking absolutely furious at his own weakness. One thing he’d been taught his whole life: never let people see that you’re weak. They’ll take advantage and use your weakness to kill you. I was taught something very similar in the CIA.

“There’s something else,” I said. “Something important.”

“What is it?”

“Sokolov is using some kind of evidence to sway your men against you. I’d estimate that sixty to seventy percent of your people are going over to his side. He calls it the evidence of your crimes.”

Yuri’s eyes narrowed.

“What crimes?” he said.

“I think you know.”

I kept my face calm and blank. It hurt me to do this to him. He was shot and vulnerable, and I really felt like I was getting closer to him, forming a new connection that was better and healthier than the old one we’d shared. But this was something I needed to know, so I would use all the dirty tricks if I needed to. Even if it made me feel like a bitch.

And it did.

I gave him the stare, like Sokolov had told me everything.
